"Texas voters OK gay marriage ban

By a margin of 76 to 24 percent, Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment on Tuesday that defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman.

The amendment was placed not just in the state Constitution but in the Texas Bill of Rights, a section that up until now served to protect Lone Star citizens, not to deny them fundamental rights.

With the vote, Texas became the 19th state to place an anti-gay marriage amendment in its constitution. Fifteen of those amendments have been ratified by voters in the last 16 months, a trend that began with Missouri in August 2004 and hit a maximum point last November with the ratification of 11 amendments in one day. Although Texas was the only state with an amendment up for a vote this fall, anti-marriage activists are gearing up to place initiatives on the California primary ballot next June, and on several state midterm slates a year from now."
